These boots may seem like overkill for most people, because they are HEAVY and expensive - but let me tell you from personal experience that they are worth it. They lasted me for years with heavy use. I wore them for basic day hikes, for long backpacking hauls, for 45-mile speed hikes, for traveling thru Australia, as work boots for construction, around horses to protect my feet, around rattlesnakes to protect my feet, and even as winter boots in the snow in Boston. They have been EVERYWHERE with me, and they lasted for a very long time. (Compare this with GTX boots which often crack, don't stay waterproof for very long, and usually wear out in about a year with heavy use.)
An important thing to note: although they are billed as "dry climate" boots, they work just as well as GTX if you waterproof them. The beauty of leather is that it holds up so much better than synthetic fabrics, is more comfortable, more durable, less stinky, etc. BUT - you have to maintain them. This is very easy to do - just rub some mink oil into them if they have been getting wet a lot and are no longer shedding water. I usually didn't do this very frequently, maybe every month, or at max every week if I was hiking quite a bit. Once they are well-oiled, they shed water no problem, and will keep your feet very very comfy and dry. They never gave me blisters, which is a beautiful thing. I think these boots are very unique because hardly anyone makes full leather shoes anymore. This isn't because they aren't as good, but because they are much more expensive compared to GtX and other synthetic fabrics and we are turning into a disposable culture!
Also - two downsides:
1. like many GTX shoes, they do not breathe. This means that your feet will get sweaty in the shoes from time to time on a hot hike. Don't worry - when you rest for the day, just unlace your boots for a second and air your feet out. No problem! If you are really having a problem, change your socks.
2. They do NOT pack well for travel - they are super heavy (built for anything, any adventure you may come across!) and will weigh you down if you aren't wearing them on your feet. So take this into consideration.
But, all of this being said, if you want a shoe you know will support you no matter what, that will always do the job when you need to be sure of your footwear on a backpacking trip or a big trip, you should buy this shoe. It won't let you down. I will keep buying this shoe as it wears about every 5-7 years or so, because I have never had a more comfortable and reliable boot. Go for the real leather experience - you won't regret it!
