From the Manufacturer
Innovation and tradition share equally deep roots at SCARPA, a muti-generational, family-owned business whose headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in the same region of northern Italy where it was founded in 1938. SCARPA builds performance footwear for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, trail-running and other outdoor pursuits. Aside from being the Italian word for "shoe," SCARPA is an acronym for Societa Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima (Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo Mountain Area).

5A mountaineering boot that feels like a slipper!
By E. Dutt
I have used the Scarpa T1 telemark boots for many years, and happened to be in Venice, Italy this spring, so I took a day trip out to the Scarpa factory in Asolo. I went looking of a new pair of T1's and came back with these boots... as well as a pair for my son, and another model for my daughter. Sort of went nuts.

They are fabulous! Of course a lot has to do with my foot and Scarpa's sizing seem to match perfectly, but selection of leather in the upper is just perfect... not too thick or stiff like in the La Sportiva upper (which I have used for many years). The boot bends perfectly and doesn't bind to cause discomfort even when occasionally over flexing behind the toes.

The lacing lock at the ankle, allows you to lace below the ankel (top of the foot) at a different tension than the leg, which leads to great descent comfort because you it keeps your foot from sliding forward in the boot as your weight and step force tends to do... preventing bruised toes. Normally you might have to tighten your whole lacing or adjust the tension more often as the different tensions even out as you walk. I find that I can wear thinner technical socks because the boot fits so perfectly and I don't need any "fill padding".

My title refers to the feel that these boots, which are top level mountaineering boots mind you, are so comfortable that they feel like regular shoes... even slippers, but with great support from the Vibram sole and inner mechanics that I don't know anything about. I can walk for ever. All the other boots I have had, with the possible exception of my 1989 Vasque Sundowners (Italian made at that time), that I have resoled and used for 20 years, feel like I have boots on, but not these. And that is saying a lot, because the Sundowner was a great boot, but a light-duty hiking boot, not a mountaineering boot.

Like most boots, it all comes down to fit. If your foot and the Scarpa mold are the same you will love these boots for years.

Last but not least. They are 100% Italian made in Asolo... as are all Scarpa products. As far as I know, the company produces all their products responsibly with regards to both the environment and their workers. My sense was that they are really proud of what they make. I am tired of buying products that cost me possibly a little less (sometimes are more expensive) but are of inferior materials and/or workmanship. Where workers have horrible working conditions, and factories take no responsibility for their environmental footprint. I am going to start looking at the high cost of the low price when buying in the future, and I if I can wear these boots out, I will continue to buy from Scarpa as long as they continue to manufacture in Italy.

5Great Summer Mountaineering Boots
By J. E. Hattrell
I bought these boots primarily with long alpine rock routes in mind. Having recenty returned from a hard alpine climb on the North Face of Mt Hicks (New Zealand), I am totally happy with them for that purpose, and they can also handle the occasional bit of steep ice quite well. Access to the climb involved two days of hiking over moraine and glaciated terrain, and these boots were so lightweight and comfortable it was almost like I was hiking in sneakers. Highly recommended!
